It’s time again for the Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association’s gigantic garage sale from 7 a.m.-noon Aug. 5 at Sangha Hall, 424 Kilauea Ave.

It’s time again for the Hilo Betsuin Buddhist Women’s Association’s gigantic garage sale from 7 a.m.-noon Aug. 5 at Sangha Hall, 424 Kilauea Ave.

Kitchenware, appliances, books, toys, games, household goods, furniture, clothing for everyone, purses, jewelry and treasures of all kinds will be available, said Karen Maedo, BWA president and co-chairwoman of the event.

Limited craft items hand-sewn by BWA members and plants will be on sale as well.

Through the generosity of church members and friends, truckloads of donated items are collected annually. Maedo recommends to come early for the best bargains. There is ample parking and free admission.

The garage sale is the biggest project for BWA and enables the organization to make substantial monetary contributions toward minor and major projects at the Hilo Betsuin.

In the community, the BWA donates aprons and lap blankets to Hale Anuenue, Life Care Center, Legacy Hilo and Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center.

Members also volunteer at the Peanut Butter Ministry, Blood Bank of Hawaii and Project Dana, and participates in many islandwide activities.

“BWA’s lifelong dedication to living the Dharma has extended far beyond the kitchen and temple compound into the larger community,” said Jan Higashi, BWA publicity chairwoman.

Formerly known as Hilo Hongwanji Fujinkai, the name was changed to Hilo Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association in 2004.
